Media Kits For Large Volumes
What is the difference between the Media Kits and the 1-Liter Algal Culture Media volumes prepared by UTEX?
The main difference between the twoābesides not being made by our magical handsāis the total volume beingĀ shipped. Media Kits contain concentrated chemical components that when mixedĀ with the appropriate volume of water, produce the specified number of LitersĀ indicated. The lower total volume and weightĀ means it does not cost as much to ship.
WhyĀ does the weight matter?Ā OrderingĀ ten, 1-Liter volumes of prepared media would have shipping costs calculated using the total combined weight of 10 Liters, or approximately 25 lbs ( ~11.34 Kg). If a Media Kit can prepareĀ 10 Liters of media but omits most of the water,Ā then the shipping cost is calculated withĀ the weight of the concentrated solutions only, or approximately 2.5 lbs (~1134 g). Add those savings to the generous discount the Kits provide on a per Liter basis, and you are left with a cost-effective solution to your media needs.

Media Kits include all the chemical components needed to prepare the total volume of media indicated. All solutions are shipped sterile and should be handled aseptically to avoid contamination.
Add-In Boosters | Media Upgrade Kits
Media Add-Ins provide a nutrient boost to algal culturing media, or add a missing component needed from the original recipe. Trying to grow diatoms but the media you have on hand does not have a silica source? Use the Sodium Metasilicate Add-In to provide that source of silica. Silica is often required when culturing diatoms or any other strains that require silica.
Media Upgrade Kits provide additional components needed to build upon a simple base medium. For example, Bristol Medium is the base component for more nutrient rich media like Bold 3N (B3N) and Modified Bold 3N Medium (MB3N).
