Algae Details

UTEX Number: 3242
Class: Cyanophyceae
Strain: Limnoraphis birgei   J Komárek et al.
Medium: BG-11 Medium (BG-11)
Origin: North Castle, NY USA
Description of Location: This strain was collected from North Lake, an 8.9-hectare lake that is part of a system of dammed lakes in the Mianus River watershed, North Lake is a dimictic, mesotrophic lake used primarily for recreation (e.g. swimming and boating). Triploid grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were introduced to the lake to control excessive growth of invasive macrophytes. The lake experiences cyanobacterial blooms dominated by Limnoraphis birgei often co-occurring with other bloom-formers (e.g. Microcystis, Dolichospermum, Aphanizomenon) in late summer and early fall.

Notes:

This strain is likely capable of non-heterocyst N2 fixation. Growth experiments demonstrate substantial biomass increase in N-free BG-11 medium; at rates not significantly different from those observed in N-replete media. While this strain can also grow on solid BG-11 medium, upon transfer back into liquid medium the filaments do not retain their buoyancy and are no longer viable.

Why can't I purchase this strain?

The availability of UTEX algal strains changes on occasion; cultures may be temporarily deactivated in the online catalog if they are not considered to be healthy or if they are being cleaned for contaminants. Depending on the degree of attention needed, it may take 4-12 weeks before a culture is recovered and added back to the list of active strains.

We encourage you to explore and learn about the many diverse strains in the Collection. If a particular strain is unavailable for purchase, enter your e-mail address above to be placed on a notification list, and UTEX will contact you when it is placed back into active circulation.
