Algae in the Bank
Long before The Culture Collection of Algae was housed at The University of Texas at Austin, our collection was already making headlines.
This April 2, 1960 cover of Science News Letter featured the article “Algae in the Bank,” highlighting early efforts to preserve and distribute living algal cultures. The cover photo captures our founder and director, Dr. Richard Starr, during the collection’s time at Indiana University, when it was known as the Indiana Culture Collection.
More than six decades later, the mission remains the same: safeguarding algal biodiversity and supporting research around the world—just on a much larger scale.
